As an Alfresco resource who has been working with the product since 2.0; and just now returning to a full time Alfresco role, I thought I would weigh in on this issue and hopefully not get trolled to death.
If attracting developers and contributors is important along with managing and exposing the discussions related to Honeycomb, I am curious why we don’t take advantage of the Issues functionality already in the GitHub open source repository. Just now leaving GitHub to rejoin the Alfresco development world, we used it exclusively for all communication and it works great. Also everyone in the World seems to know how to use it and many new developers prefer it for its openness and ease of access, not to mention the historical context it provides. Its also free if we continue to use it in the open source community.
Just my two cents worth.

I imagine there's a lot of people with stories like mine. I just don't have the time. I spend most of my day at work, where we *do* have an Alfresco install, but that doesn't mean I work with it much. I've customized a couple modules for our use, but it can be weeks in between times I even log into it (I do very little with documents normally). Been meaning to do an upgrade the last couple of months again, but I'm simply swamped with other higher priority projects. Once I get home, the rest of my time is gone between eating, sleeping, and trying to keep the house and cars from falling apart.
So, yes, the communication method should target the most active people as I don't expect it would make a huge difference for those of us that aren't very active. Still, the big part where I feel left out is in the IRC communications, a lot of good stuff happens there, but I miss out so many times due to the nature of IRC. E-mail, it may be awhile before I see it, but it *will* be there waiting for me, unlike IRC where I just plain miss out. :-(

I think the question we should ask is: Why are people not contributing?
As for Slack: I think it is awesome and it works great for other Open
Source projects. There are workarounds for "issues" like
Google-indexing. Still I'd suggest to keep this can of worms closed
until the real issues are resolved.
