[OOTB-hive] CE looking bad?

Hi all,
These are some of my observations and feelings about Alfresco and this
conversation.
Alfresco, the platform, is open source. The code has been, and continues
to be, released under the GPL. It's open source, full stop. What
Alfresco, the company, does for it's enterprise offerings is it's business
and prerogative. Should Alfresco release all of it's enterprise features
to the community? That's not our call to make. Sure, those features would
be fantastic to have access to, but as it has been stated several times
through this thread, enterprise and community editions fit different
business needs. Do I need 99% of what the enterprise version offers for
some of my small business clients? No, of course not. That remaining 1%
of functionality I'll either build myself or look to the community for.
Alfresco has been very clear and explicit about their commitment to the
community and continuing to offer an open source code base.
Sort term, it's clear that Alfresco is following through with it's promise
to the community at large. You don't have to look much further than what
Gab, Richard, and others have pointed out (and done!) in this thread. I'm
happy with the progress of change these great people are bringing to the
platform.
Long term, Alfresco will make its decisions based on what it sees and
requires to operate as a company. There is no doubt that some of those
decisions will impact the platform from an open source and community
perspective. We as a community need to come together to try and influence
some those choices Alfresco management is making. That's done by building
bridges, engaging in constructive conversations, and contributing ourselves.
What some marketing department thinks about how their offerings compare has
little bearing on decisions or recommendations I make of any platform. As
someone who's been involved in architecting and implementing technical
solutions for over 20 years, you look past the marketing message. When
evaluating or engaging with an entity about their platform, I look first to
the technical documentation, product roadmap, and it's community.
Best,
Ben
