[OOTB-hive] My challenge to all members of the Order of the Bee

Angel, All,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I am really happy there is some movement back in this list..

I personally think that part of Angel’s analysis is coherent, but I really do not think the situation to be as apocalyptical as he had drawn.

I share his impression that alfresco is losing its (real) open-source spirit and is more and more being lured into the dark-side, but I do not think that battle is lost yet. As a matter of fact, I do think that the community does need the Order now more than ever.
Alfresco is not a charity, it is a profit company but it definitely needs this community to continue prospering, I would say now more than the past few years, the fact that it (Alfresco) is shifting from being a product company to a platform company is on our side, as it puts the Developer at the centre of focus again and pumps some life into the community veins… You can already sense that in the REBIRTH of the Alfresco DevCon (I think the order should have more effect there), the now frequent and recurring meetups, the enhancements made to the contribution workflow to Alfresco which is now made easier than ever …

I now believe that the order needs to step up once again, and try to conserve the gains of this community and continue to pursue its goals…
I recon that we had problems in the past with participation, and as far as I can see, we got into a vicious circle: people want to engage/contribute but are afraid of the load that might bring to them -> most people end up not being involved -> responsibility and the load falls on the handful of people that had stepped up -> After a while those people get tired and step down and the circle turns over and over… IMHO, there is only one solution to this : ENGAGE ! ; if everyone within this community does engage, there will definitely be less load and more fun for everyone !

Regards,
—Younes

Hard separation between Sales & Development inside the company has produced a toxic ecosystem, where Open Source is relegated to leisure and fun but it’s ignored in any other area. This is why I feel sad about Alfresco, and this is why I think that Alfresco has changed its direction.

Direction of Alfresco is targeting the product to a fake “Open Source” company. My guess is that Alfresco Community will be useless in a year or two. During this transition many Community developers (like me) will find another technologies to work with. So, in the end, the Community will die by its own.

(and to ourselves) that there is a group of people, distributed across the globe, that care deeply about both the software and the community of people involved in making, using, implementing, and customizing that software.
>>>
>>> Since then, The Order has achieved many things. It organized and executed two outstanding events. It took ownership of the Support Tools project and drove it forward. It served as a "brand" with which those truly passionate about the community could identify.
>>>
>>> Today the future for Alfresco and the community is no more certain than it was in 2014. Yet, I feel like our organization has lost its way. The board never meets formally. The subcommittees have mostly stopped work. Even simple, focused efforts aimed at getting more people involved and producing output fell flat.
>>>
>>> As we look to electing a new board I would like to challenge each of you to think about the following:
>>> * Does this organization still make sense?
>>> * If so, does the mission need to be adjusted?
>>> * If the mission is still good, how will we execute differently in order to achieve it?
>>> * If changes are needed, what are those changes?
>>>
>>> I am raising this during the elections because I think it is important for board candidates to express their thoughts in these areas. But it is not the board's sole responsibility to set and drive the mission--they are just custodians.
>>>
>>> My challenge is for all members to consider why this organization exists, whether it should continue to exist, and, if so, what needs to change to move it forward and how you will help make that happen.
